At their annual Buzzcon event in 2018, video game developer and publisher Blizzard Entertainment shocked fans by announcing a complete revamp of WarCraft 3 their hugely popular, high fantasy, classic first launched in 2002. Called WarCraft 3 Reforged, players still get to command armies from the point of view of four powerful races: mysterious night elves, savage orcs, insidious undead and noble humans. It follows the game’s traditional real time strategy, described by Blizzard Entertainment as ‘easy to learn, but difficult to master’ however with all new graphics, animations and user interface, WarCraft 3 Reforged has morphed the WarCraft 3 vibe into something that looks much more modern.

A Reimagining 17 Years In The Making

WarCraft 3 Reforged but provides a host of new features, its 4K resolution visuals being the most noticeable. Every character, building and environment has been rebuilt using cutting edge modelling and rendering. The game’s artificial intelligence is another significant improvement, offering a much smoother, cleaner experience than the earlier WarCraft 3.

The map editor that players know and love returns in full, but developers Blizzard are making the map creation process more intuitive. It will be interesting to see what the modder community, central to WarCraft 3 success will do with the WarCraft3 Reforged’s custom maps and more efficient tools. Scheduled for release in 2019, actual launch date is not yet confirmed, however, multi-player beta access is now available with pre-purchase of WarCraft 3 Reforged.

A Respectful Reworking of WarCraft 3

WarCraft 3 was the original hero-centric real time strategy game classic that brought this format to the mainstream after its launch in 2002. Uniquely, WarCraft 3 Reforged takes this retro gaming world classic and respectfully reimagines it. Blizzard Production Director Kaeo Milker best describes this process in an interview with Venture Beat; “This is a game that people are still playing and loving. We want to make sure the Reforged experience … is something they’re excited about. Making sure it’s a worthy successor to what Warcraft III has been and still is today.”
